Hygienist’s Corner – Colleen
“One of the first and most important things we do at every visit is to perform an oral cancer screening. That involves thoroughly examining both the inside and outside of the mouth as well as checking the lymph nodes in the neck. We are looking for bumps or areas of odd coloration where a lesion may be present. If we find something suspicious, we’ll oftentimes send a sample to a lab for a biopsy. Most of them come back benign, but screenings occasionally discover early stages of cancer. A patient of East End Dental Wellness was recently diagnosed at our office after a screening and was immediately seen by an oral surgeon.
It is very common for people to have indications of oral cancer and not notice them at all. That’s why it is so essential for us to provide at every single visit, whether you come in once per year or four times.”
